Train Math and Earth Science

Later in the day we watered our plants
from last week's seed planting activity.

We started off the day with computer time. Starfall.com has worked it's way into our morning routine, usually right after breakfast. Today the three of us all sat together and played reading games and addition games for almost an hour. We let Jacob do the clicking. He's starting to get the hang of using the mouse.

This evening, while dinner was in the oven, Thomas and I had a math lesson with trains. He built this very sturdy bridge all by himself. He grouped the trains by size and color and then as he lined them up we practiced counting. He can count up to 14 but he has trouble from 15 to 20. It's "...14, 16, 20, 21, 22..." After that he can go to at least 50 without missing any more.

I also quizzed him with some addition problems similar to the ones we had seen earlier on starfall.com. He was able to add different combinations of trains up to about 6, such as 2+1, 2+3, 3+3, and 5+1. He seems to actually understand the terminology and will say, for example "five plus one equals six" as he hooks a single train onto a group of 5.

After dinner we studied a few sections of the National Geographic Visual Encyclopedia of Earth that we checked out from the library. This is one that I think we could use as a permanent part of our curriculum, possibly even all the way through high school. I've added it to Thomas' Amazon wish list.

Thomas' favorite topics are still volcanoes and the water cycle. He also wanted to read about tornadoes.
