Rome

We didn't do much school today. The boys and I were each working on our own projects most of the morning so in the afternoon I made sure we got some reading time in.

Art/History:
Their handwriting notebook alternates between having them write out the history sentences and mini art lessons that have to do with the same time period. Today the art page described statues the Romans and Greeks had at the entrances to buildings and other important places. The boys were each supposed to draw a gate with sculptures on the sides.

Jacob

 Thomas

While they were drawing, I read to them out of our library books about the rise and fall of ancient Rome.

We also read the backs of a couple of timeline cards.

Later in the evening, I found Jacob trying to read one of his favorite books all by himself. I could tell he was getting frustrated so I offered to help him. Together we sounded out each word on the first page - and this book has a lot of big words. He was so proud of himself just after reading that one page. I love seeing his confidence grow.

At bedtime we read more about Archimedes. This chapter was about levers and how Archimedes was able to move a huge warship all by himself using a pulley system.
