Classical Conversations Week 6

I went to class with Thomas today. Wendy led the class today since Hong's kids were sick. The day goes by pretty quickly and I am helping out the kids a lot of the time so I don't get pictures of everything. Here are a few highlights.

Geography:
We learned to identify Spain, France, Germany, Alexandria, and Carthage.

Art:
The boys drew half a face onto a folded piece of paper then traced it on the other side so that when they opened it up they had a perfectly symmetrical face or mask design. Then they traced that onto these really cool sheets of black cardstock. Once the design was transferred, they used wooden sticks to scrape away the black layer to reveal colors beneath.

Science:
We reviewed the different types of invertebrates and vertebrates then the boys worked together to sort out pictures of animals into categories.

Math:
After school we headed to the farm. One of the things I love about our new van is the clock. I can set it to display an analog clock. The boys are always looking at the clock and asking how much longer or just keeping track of how long we've been in the car. Now with the clock set to analog they get to practice their clock reading skills. A few times today Jacob asked what time it was so we worked together to figure out what time the hands were showing us. We also talked about the different ways to divide up an hour (halves and quarters) and we counted by fives several times. Jacob likes to know how long a trip will take and he counts down the minutes until we are supposed to arrive. I think by looking at the hands moving versus a digital number, he is starting to visualize the passage of time a little better.

History/Science:
At bedtime we read another chapter of Archimedes. This one was about density and water displacement. I think that was a little bit over their heads but the story is still fun to read and they are getting used to hearing the vocabulary of physical science.
