Nerf Guns

We always start off our week by counting our money and reassessing our savings goals. The boys both get paid for doing school work and chores. Thomas was excited because he is only a few cents away from $20. Every time he reaches a new denomination he trades in what he has for the next larger bill.

They boys each got a new Nerf gun over the weekend and couldn't keep their hand off of them this morning so I decided to make them part of our review time. We set up our memory work flash cards in a pocket chart and the boys took turns shooting at it.

Whenever they hit a card they had to read it out loud and try to say the answer without looking.

After we had reviewed all the cards we got to work on the rest of our subjects.

Geography:
We spent some more time on the Hebrew Empire. We identified all the places on our color map.

Then the boys each colored their own map and labeled it.

Phonics:
The boys took turns reading our of their phonics book.

Today was just a review of all the sounds we have learned up to this point.

Math:
Jacob has a new math workbook. I tried giving both boys the same work but it is usually too easy for Thomas or too hard for Jacob. Thomas started a 3rd grade book this year and I had just been giving Jacob the leftover pages from Thomas' older workbooks and a few other printables I found online. I finally decided it was time for fresh start for Jacob. We have really liked Thomas' new book so I got the same thing for Jacob in the 1st grade edition, published by Evan-Moor. In both books each new concept is presented on three double-sided pages with a short test on the last page. This works perfectly with our Monday-Wednesday schedule. I can introduce a new concept on Monday, work on it again Tuesday, then have a short review and test on Wednesday.

Today Jacob started with some basic counting up to 20.  I was glad to see that he can finally count and write all of his teen numbers with ease.

Thomas is continuing to work with place value up to the thousands.

History:
We spread all of our timeline cards out over the floor and the boys worked together to put them in order. It was a lot of fun watching them work together! We listened to the first part of the song several times to make sure we had everything in the right place.

Then we read about the Greek Dark Ages and watched a couple of YouTube videos.

Handwriting:
They wrote the names of the Greek and Roman gods in cursive.

At some point during the day I could not find Thomas. I looked all over and finally found him sitting in a box listening to his iPod.
