The boys are suddenly interested in learning to read. At lunch yesterday they were trying to one-up each other by saying "I can read more words than you" back and forth and naming all the words they could think of. That's when I remembered a set of beginning words flash cards I made over 3 years ago from abook I had checked out from the library, Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons. At the time I had grand plans of teaching the boys to read before they went to pre-school. My attempts failed miserably because they were not the least bit interested. Fast forward to today, they never did go to pre-school and we are half way through our first year of homeschool kindergarten. I pulled out those flash cards, dusted them off, and we had a little competition to see who could read more words. Thomas sounded out all 100 words. Jacob needed a little help but he followed right along. In the end Thomas was helping Jacob with the harder words.
We had so much fun we decided to add word practice to our daily schedule. I picked out the first set of words and put them in our pocket chart. Today the boys chose to write out the words using stencils.
